About Samuel Brown

Samuel Brown is a professionally trained violin maker currently residing in Michigan. Despite his parents being neither musicians nor woodworkers, he took interest in music from a young age. Throughout his youth he primarily played double bass in his school's orchestra and the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony, as well as taking multiple woodshop classes. Both of these interests culminated into an interest in instrument making.

After graduating high school, he decided not to pursue performance, but instead applied at the Chicago School of Violin Making. Throughout his three years at the school he made many extra instruments, with a great focus on decorated brescian instruments. Studying under both Antoine Nedelec and Jeff Phillips, he was able to see many historic instruments as well as contemporary copies. While at school, he also took a specific interest in varnish and pigment making, experimenting with them to suit the needs of himself and his close colleagues. During his final year of school he worked at Seman Violins, doing setups, repairs and rehairs for their rental fleet.

Upon graduating from the Chicago School of Violin Making in 2023, he moved back to Michigan, where he works fulltime on varnish making and instrument making, with a focus on Cremonese violins and decorated Brescian violas.
